About the McKinley Engineering Academy
McKinley High School has many students interested in pursuing a post high school education in an engineering field. In addition, a significant percentage of students entering the University of Hawaii's College of Engineering are McKinley graduates. Several McKinley teachers and administrators are working together to sustain an engineering program to support these budding engineers.
Under the direction of Principal Milton Shishido, the McKinley Engineering Academy was formed in the 2004-05 school year. McKinley was also the first and only school in the state to operate under license with the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) pre-engineering curriculum. Project Lead The Way is all about teaching and learning. The hands-on, project and problem-based PLTW approach adds rigor to traditional technical programs and relevance to traditional academics.
Many of our graduates have moved onto post-secondary studies in various technical fields including civil, electrical and mechanical engineering. A respectable number of students have chosen the architectural career pathway as an alternative. We have students who are currently enrolled or graduated from fine institutions such as:
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- Carnegie Mellon University
- Illinois Institute of Technology
- University of Southern California
- Northeastern University
- Vanderbilt University
- Villanova University
- Seattle University
- University of Washington
- Rochester Institute of Technology
- Creighton University
- University of Hawaii.
The McKinley Engineering Academy's goals are summarized in our vision and mission statements.
Our Vision Statement: To graduate students with a strong foundation to become successful engineers.
Our Mission: To provide an integrated curriculum focusing on applied mathematics, science, and technology for future engineers.
